# Be Ghoulish… Not Foolish: Safety Tips for a Hazard-Free Halloween

Published: October 31, 2024

You don’t have to be a kid to love Halloween. Costumes, lawn decorations and extra candy are fun at any age. The night is still risky for younger children. The [National Safety Council](https://www.nsc.org/community-safety/safety-topics/seasonal-safety/autumn-safety/halloween) reports they are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on other days.

If you or someone you love is injured because of negligence, talk with a [personal injury lawyer](https://callsam.com/case-types/car-accidents/). Simple precautions help trick-or-treaters of all ages.

## HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FOR CHILDREN AND ADULTS

Accidents still happen. These steps lower the odds:

- Look both ways and wait for cars to stop, even if you have the right of way
- Use marked crosswalks when you can
- Watch for cars pulling in or backing out of driveways
- Carry a flashlight on dark streets or streets without sidewalks
- Skip texting while you walk, and model that for kids
- Young children should go with a trusted adult or teen
- Older kids should trick-or-treat in a group and stay together
- Teach kids never to go into a stranger’s home or car

## SAFEGUARD YOUR HOME TO PREVENT ACCIDENTS

- Clear the walk and porch of toys, bikes, hoses and leaf piles
- Turn outdoor lights on and replace burned-out bulbs
- Keep dogs and other pets inside and away from the door ([dog bite](https://callsam.com/case-types/dog-bites/) claims spike when animals are startled by costumes)
- Skip open-flame pumpkins on the porch or lawn; use battery lights or set candles well off the walking path

A dark, cluttered walk is a classic [slip and fall](https://callsam.com/case-types/slip-fall-accidents/) setup. Property owners still owe visitors reasonable care.

## HALLOWEEN SAFETY TIPS FOR DRIVERS

When Halloween falls on a weekday, trick-or-treat hours overlap rush hour. A [JAMA Pediatrics](https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC6583441/) review of U.S. fatal crashes found pedestrian deaths on Halloween evenings peak around **6 p.m.**, with the highest extra risk between about 5 and 8 p.m. Children ages 4 to 8 had about a **tenfold** increase in pedestrian-fatality risk versus nearby evenings.

- Watch for children in the roadway, on medians and at the curb
- Enter and leave driveways and alleys slowly
- Assume dark costumes are hard to see at dusk
- Think twice before letting a new driver take the car out that night
- Slow down in neighborhoods without sidewalks or good lighting
- Put the phone down. Michigan’s [handheld ban](https://www.legislature.mi.gov/Laws/MCL?objectName=mcl-257-602b) (MCL 257.602b) still applies
- Turn headlights on earlier than usual

## FUN FACTS ABOUT THE HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN

- Halloween is often traced to **Samhain**, a Gaelic end-of-harvest festival. The church later marked November 1 as All Saints’ Day. The night before became All Hallows’ Eve, then Halloween.
- Orange and black are tied to that harvest-season imagery: black for the end of summer, orange for the crop.
- In medieval Europe, black cats were sometimes linked with the devil and witchcraft, which is why they still show up in Halloween art.
- Costumes at Samhain were meant to confuse or ward off harmful spirits.
- Jack-o’-lanterns come from the Irish folktale of “Stingy Jack,” who wandered with a coal in a hollowed turnip. Irish and Scottish immigrants in the U.S. switched to pumpkins, which are easier to carve.
- The [National Retail Federation](https://nrf.com/media-center/press-releases/nrf-consumer-survey-finds-halloween-spending-to-reach-record-13-1-billion) expected a record **$13.1 billion** in U.S. Halloween spending in 2025, up from $11.6 billion in 2024 and above the prior $12.2 billion record in 2023.
