The tragic case arising out of the deadly Pit Bull attack involving four year old Xavier Strickland and his mother is yet another reminder that we owe a duty to protect the most vulnerable among us.
Today, at the Preliminary Exam in Detroit’s 36th District Court, graphic testimony and evidence, including a shocking video capturing the grotesque mauling, told a story that is all too familiar for many families in our community who are terrorized by these animals when their owners recklessly fail to protect their neighbors – especially children.
The video is an offense to all decent people and a challenge to our community to do something to ensure that this never happens again. It is easy to view this video as a gawker would; it is surely gruesome. But we must do much more. Let us commit to seize this moment and take action. Failure to do so insults the memory of this young child.
We must and can do better.
We will do our part by fighting and winning for Xavier Strickland’s family in the civil justice system. We will work tirelessly to hold the defendant accountable. We will also work with policy-makers to advocate for impactful public policy that reduces the risks posed by these animals and, more importantly, careless owners.
