The Sam Bernstein Law Firm Sues U of M for Football Stadium’s Failure to Accommodate Disabled Fans

Michigan Paralyzed Veterans of America v. The University of Michigan

This lawsuit alleged that University of Michigan violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) when it completed a $226 million renovation of the football stadium that failed to include sufficient seating, restrooms, concessions and parking for people with disabilities. The suit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.

The U.S. Department of Justice assisted in the suit, which was settled in March, 2008. As a result, the university was required to make numerous renovations; including 329 additional wheelchair seats throughout the stadium and an additional 135 accessible seats in clubhouses. The university also improved wheelchair accessibility in the areas of parking, access routes, restrooms, concessions and other amenities. In addition, changes were made in the players’ locker rooms and coaches’ offices to make them accessible to journalists with disabilities.
