What is Paraquat and How is it Used?

Paraquat (pronounced para-kwat) dichloride is a powerful and highly toxic herbicide used extensively to kill weeds and invasive grasses on crops such as cotton, corn and soybeans. Due to its possible link to Parkinson’s disease and other disorders, paraquat products are banned in 32 countries.

However, as many crops become resistant to other weed-killing products, the use of paraquat in the U.S. has increased in recent years, despite its potential health and safety risks. The EPA considers paraquat a “Restricted Use Product,” a classification used for products with “the potential to cause unreasonable adverse effects to the environment and injury to applicators or bystanders without added restrictions.”

As such, paraquat may only be used by certified pesticide applicators who complete a specialized training program that includes information about the product’s toxicity and the consequences of misuse. Non-certified workers may not use paraquat under any circumstances, including mixing, loading and applying the product, even when supervised by a certified applicator.

In addition to Paraquat Concentrate®, paraquat is used in other products marketed under some of the following names:

  • Gramoxone®
  • Ortho-Paraquat
  • Blanco®
  • Cyclone SL 2.0®
  • Firestorm®
  • Helmquat 3SL®
  • Bonedry®
  • Devour®
  • Para-Shot 3.0®

What are the Health and Safety Risks Associated with Paraquat?

Paraquat has such a high level of toxicity that ingesting even a sip can be fatal. Additionally, paraquat poisoning, which can lead to lung damage and other serious conditions, can occur from skin contact or inhalation.

Furthermore, research shows chronic exposure to paraquat can cause damage to the nervous system, increasing the risk of Parkinson’s disease and other motor disorders.

In a 2011 study published by the National Institutes of Health showed individuals exposed to paraquat were 2.5 times more likely to develop Parkinson's disease than those with no exposure.

Other research in the U.S. and other parts of the world have revealed similar data connecting paraquat to Parkinson’s disease. Moreover, exposure to paraquat in conjunction with another potent fungicide known as maneb increased the risk of Parkinson’s disease by a shocking 75%, according to a 2009 study published in the American Journal of Epidemiology.
